Description

WHERE: 198 School St., Hyannis, MA

What: A community meeting to discuss a new strategy to fight corporate consolidation in food and fisheries

Why?: The growing stranglehold of Big Food corporations has long threatened our lives and livelihoods, and it's getting worse. Inspired by Occupy and Standing Rock, we know we need a big movement to shed light on these problems and rally public support. Only then will we get the relief and policy solutions we need!

Who: Fishermen, Fisheries workers & advocates who've felt the pain of fisheries consolidation first hand

----

We in the Real Food Challenge student network have led campaigns on college campuses, fighting for a just food system, fair contracts for farmers and fishers and more transparency in our food system. We've pushed for universities to support traceable, local fisheries, and anti-consolidation measures in fisheries policy.

Today, with the mounting threats to our land, oceans and livelihoods, we know we have to come together as food producers, young activists and food chain workers to build a bigger, bolder strategy to reclaim our food system from corporate control.

For 10 months a core team of young food justice leaders have be planning a movement to do just that --- and we want to share what they've come up with, with you! Though a Community Meeting, we hope to hear each others' experience with the fishing industry, hear reactions to this new movement strategy and get your feedback so that we can launch this plan with integrity, knowing that it truly reflects your passions, concerns, and hopes of our community.

What can you expect from this Community Meeting?

You'll join hosts from NAMA and us at Real Food Challenge, plus 8-12 other participants for a couple hours lively conversation. There will be three essential components:

  1. A presentation: to learn about this vision for growing new phase of food justice movement-building

  2. Open discussion: we'll share our personal experiences with the industry and hear from others

  3. Anonymous feedback: you can share additional thoughts /questions about the strategy we're proposing in writing (if you choose)
