Maine Food to Portland's Institutions' Tables

You are invited to a meeting with Maine Farm & Sea Cooperative at Portland City Hall

We will share our new report & toolkit “Maine Food to Portland’s Tables” which details processes that institutions in Greater Portland can use to create an effective food procurement program that supports our local farmers and fishermen and increases local food options.  

This guide and our meeting will focus on the implementation of possible solutions for institutional purchasing of local foods.  

• We will detail our 9 Step Plan for implementing a local foods program at your institution.
• We will go over a proposed harvest of the month program that institutions can adopt.  
• We will discuss ways that institutions in the Greater Portland area can cooperate and collaborate to support our local producers.

We are building upon great work including: the Greater Portland Council of Governments work to identify the challenges and solutions of institutional purchasing of local foods; Ron Adams' work in the Portland Schools; the advocacy and best practices from Farm to Institution New England and the Maine Farm to School Network; the Mayor's Initiative for a Healthy and Sustainable Food System, and our recent bid for the UMaine System’s Dining Service Contract.

 

Maine Farm & Sea Cooperative is interested in supporting the cooperative purchasing of local institutions so that they can access greater quantities of local fish, produce, meat, dairy, processed goods and prepared foods.  Working together we can have a greater impact on our local food economy.
