Description

Soil, the source of life, is our strongest ally in the fight against global warming. More carbon is present in soils than in all vegetation and the atmosphere combined. Even slight increases in soil carbon can have hugely beneficial implications for climate mitigation and resilience.

Seth Itzkan -- co-founder of Soil4Climate, a Vermont-based nonprofit advocating for soil restoration as a climate solution -- will discuss local and global efforts to restore soil. Examples include Vermont Senate Bill 159, calling for a Regenerative Agriculture Certification Program, and France's “4 per 1000" global soil carbon initiative, through which signatory nations and other regional authorities pledge a 0.4 percent (“4 per 1000”) increase in soil organic carbon per year.

Jesse McDougall -- author of Vermont Senate Bill 159 -- and his wife, Caroline, own and operate Studio Hill, LLC on Pullman Farm, a fourth-generation family farm in Shaftsbury, Vermont. Studio Hill is a pastured meat operation and an education center that serves as a working example of regenerative economics and ecology.

This event, hosted by Transition Town Montpelier, is free and open to all.
