Did you know we are ending a year-long Shmita, or sabbatical year for the land, a time when all debts are forgiven? This Jewish tradition of "release" was practiced 2500 years ago in what is today Israel/Palestine and is an essential mitzvah commanded in the Torah/Bible.

Through the lens of social permaculture, Jewish text study, and regenerative food systems, Shmita: Deep Jewish Wisdom for Sustainable Living explores what Shmita might look like in 2022/5782, and what we can do collectively to prepare...

Monday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:30pm on Oct. 19, Oct. 26, Nov. 16, and Nov. 23 at Temple Israel in Greenfield, we will explore the following themes:

+ historical texts written about Shmita

+ the observation of Shmita in Israel today

+ preparations and goals articulation for the next 6 years

+ guiding Shmita principles and practices for contemporary times

+ creation of the commons and solidarity economics

+ re-localizing, regenerating, and creating equitable food systems

The workshop leader, Abrah Dresdale, is a Professor of Food Systems and Social Permaculture. In the break between classes, she will be attending and presenting at Vision 2022, Hazon's international conference on Shmita in Jerusalem. She will bring back core teachings and current thought on contemporary Shmita practices to participants in this workshop series!

Participants sign up for the series at a sliding scale of $30-$100 for four classes. The lowest end of the scale is made available for folks who are struggling financially and for students.

Please call Temple Israel to pre-register at 413.773.5884. If you have questions about the workshop, you can contact Abrah.
