Mycorrhizal Associations; symbiotic fungi and improved fields

Mycorrhizal fungi are mushrooms that work symbiotically with plant life, eg. our crops, by exchanging nutrients, carbohydrates, sugars, and water. Plants can benefit from this relationship by receiving moisture and nutrients trapped in the soil too deeply for the plants roots to access. The mushroom network, aka 'mycelium' acts as an extension of the root system by bringing these materials to the plants roots.

Hugelkultur

Huglkultur is a technique for preparing raised beds and improving soil quality. The idea is simple: allow decaying wood to pile underneath your topsoil, and the woody materials will decompose into rich, fertile soil. Does anybody have experience with this technique? I've seen it implemented once while on a farm tour and was impressed with the improvement over traditional beds.
