Invite to Public Lab 2013 Barnraising October 4-6 in Louisiana

Hi, all -- Farm Hack and Public Lab have worked together a number of times on crop monitoring with infrared photography, balloon mapping, etc, and I wanted to extend a special invitation to you all to join us for a hands-on 3-day event next month:

Public Lab invites you to join our 2013 Barnraising, October 4-6 at LUMCON Research Station in Cocodrie, Louisiana. This year's theme is Education, and there is still plenty of room for proposing sessions, un-conference style.

GitHub now shows previews of 3D Models! (STL files)

GitHub.com, the amazing repository free repository for all things Open Source, now has support for showing previews of STL files. Check out their blog post on this new feature. I'll be thinking about ways we can further integrate with GitHub, but until then there's nothing stopping us from uploading 3D models to GitHub for free and linking to them from the Farm Hack wiki pages.

barrel root washer

Problem Statement/functional need On our small organic CSA farm, we harvest a lot of root veggies for storage in the fall. This is when we harvest the largest quantities, and when the water feels the coldest on the hands. We have been out washing carrots in just above freezing temps. Most of these root veggies end up in our cold room and we give out in our fall and winter baskets. We needed a more automated way to wash and sort our root veggies.

Farmers and Hunters

Hello a friend suggested this website and I thought I'd take her up on it!

I am working on a school project and would like to talk to farm owners either on the phone or via Skype. I specifically want to discuss relationships have with hunters using their farmland, whether with or without permission and a solution I am working on to improve whatever relationship may or may not be there.

Maker Faire NYC

Hi everyone

I don't know if everyone's heard of it, but there's a Maker Faire in NYC coming up and Farm Hack is going! It's a really great for our community to get some exposure in the general maker community and also a chance for us to meet up and show off our tools to each other!

This year it's Sept 21st & 22nd. If you're able to come down, by all means, please do! If you want to show off some tools, tell us about it here and now so that we can include it in our description.

Aquaponics

Every year, we see our world population growing and a subsequent decrease in food availability. Rural America and its small farmers are losing access to labor, ingenuity, youth, and capital. Food quality and safety are being compromised for profit and an unsustainable notion of 'progress.' Budgets are getting increasingly tight for small businesses. The desertification of our environment and build up of toxins in the eco-systems is rapidly advancing, as we approach what is believed by many scientists to be the sixth mass extinction.
