Best medium for growing in aquaponics or soil based medium

I have been doing my own growing in my back yard for quite a while and found a few thing about growing. If you look at soil all over the earth one thing is pretty apparent and that is the mineral content. Trace minerals are just as important in plant production as basic nutrients in the soil. After many hours of research I have found a few thing about the best ways to grow plants and aquaponics seems to have really made things click for me.

Open Source "Pink Gardening" using Red/Blue LEDs for Indoor Plant Growth

I would like to examine how recent scientific advances in using combinations of Red and Blue light to stimulate indoor plant growth can be combined with open embedded computing to provide a truly accessible method of growing fresh produce for almost any environment. Usage of LEDs in indoor horticulture has grown substantially in the past year alone.

Aquaponics

Every year, we see our world population growing and a subsequent decrease in food availability. Rural America and its small farmers are losing access to labor, ingenuity, youth, and capital. Food quality and safety are being compromised for profit and an unsustainable notion of 'progress.' Budgets are getting increasingly tight for small businesses. The desertification of our environment and build up of toxins in the eco-systems is rapidly advancing, as we approach what is believed by many scientists to be the sixth mass extinction.

Black Soldier Fly as a Feed Alternative for Aquaculture

Main Street Farms received a SARE Farmer grant for on-farm research of Black Soldier Flies larvae (BSFL) as an alternative food-source for aquaculture and livestock. We plan to raise and breed BSFL in a heated green house year-round to find...

Getting Started

Our primary goal is to find out if raising Black Soldier Flies larva (BSFL, Hermetia illucens) is feasible for small farmers during cold upstate NY winters. Our secondary goal is to find out the ratio of pounds of larva to pounds of feed to pounds produced. Larva are fed food waste from on-site farm activity and kitchen. BSFL are an ideal feed for fish, chickens, and pigs because they are 42% protein, develop quickly, and do not infest human spaces, or carry disease. We bought in a 5000 larva to start a colony, and are using an existing heated greenhouse to raise the larva in plastic bins.

Small DIY Aquaponics System

This is a small aquaponics system I built so I could experiment with the concept. If it works out well for me I'd love to build a large version of this system but before I do want some working knowledge...
