How to encourage community members to learn and use CAD as tool to make open source sharing stronger

Looking through the AdaBio Autoconstruction book this weekend, it occurred to me that a weak link in Farm Hack's open source idea exchange is our ability to document tools accurately with measurements and scaled drawings. It seems that facilitating community members to learn CAD would be a useful path forward. Perhaps a Tool that is for CAD learning resources would be a good place to start. Maybe we can make an effort to team up with people/institutions who each/use CAD to bring them together more readily with Farm Hackers in some way.

top-loading design

this would be awesome to open source. I'm wondering how a top-loading freezer would work for the cabinet, though. It would be awkward to shuffle around flats. Seems like something that loads from the front, either salvaged or constructed, would be preferable. This is definitely on my to-do list. A commercial unit can go for $4k, new. Should be able to beat that!

Fido or Apitronics?

After a breaker tripped in the chicken palace last night, I now have an immediate need to implement a temp sensor alert system. Louis - at this point do you recommend building a FIDO, or is the apitronics close enough that I could piggyback something on top of that (soon)?

Excel Hacks for Crop Planning and Data Recording

It's that time of the year - time for planning out the season's crop. Like a lot of farmers, I have my trusty Excel template that I use to plan varieties, dates, seed orders and locations. We also end up logging our greenhouse seeding and planting records on it with notes for next year. Somehow we get this done even though we are by no means experts in Excel. So I am wondering, what could happen if we WERE experts? Sites and tools like Agsquared are a great start, but they are just not quite tailored to our farm and our needs.

offering services

I am offering assistance in inventions of all kinds. If you want to patent it and get money from it, I can offer advice, but have to admit that that is not always the way to go. I am good at welding, and wood to steel transitions. I am currently working on greenhouses, and planting methods with perrenials and annuals mixed in.
