Design Charrette and other Farm Hack Event Components

A component of the Farm Hack events since the project's start has been the Design Charrette - a small group brainstorming/design process, around a specific tool or topic. As we hold more events and think about the needs that Farm Hack events can best serve, there has been discussion within the Farm Hack core group about what use this activity serves, and how we can improve it. Here we want to invite comments and reflection from other Farm Hackers, whether you have attended an event and participated in the charrette or not.

Companion crops and Rollers

I have purchased half interest in a 15' roller. All of my cover crops are mixes (usually 8 or more). I would like to use my roller to selectively kill what i don't want growing in my cash crop. ie, in corn i will use a clover mix and/or hairy vetch. If i have these planted with a cereal (or 2), and a couple of brassicas, i am thinking the cereals might create a mat that could protect the clovers. The vetch however will be a different story as it will be as tall, or taller than the cereal.

Determining Distance

We've run into a problem in the design.

We originally thought we could measure the distance by measuring the "time of flight" between the tag and the anchor points. However, this requires the XBee radios to either give us an exact time stamp (to 300+ millionths of a second) of when messages are sent and when they arrive, or by having a very high resolution clock on both the tags and the Beaglebones (and then having the clocks calibrated when the system is deployed).

mixing your own feed, geese, hog, or rabbit?

hey all,

wondering if anyone does their own feed mixes, rather than buying the mash from the local feed companies. any tips on this?

another thing i'm looking for is cost/planning spreadsheets for raising geese/pork/rabbits/other. initial costs, reoccuring costs, time to market, market prices, etc.

thanks, dan
